We heard about Bodegas Andreu Sole from someone in La Parguera and decided to head over there for lunch. The restaurant is only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. You will find it on Route 3116 (which is a spur off of Route 116) just after you pass the signs for the parador. There was a small traffic jam at the main gate. When we made it to the front of the line, we were asked if we had reservations. We told them we didn’t but they told us to enter.
We were seated immediately and given a menu. The menu is all in Spanish but our waiter was bilingual. He explained to us that the restaurant is part of a winery which grows grapes locally near El Bosque Seco (the dry forest). They make a wine, four kinds of sangria, and a variety of liqueurs . We each opted for a sampler which consists of a small sample of everything. The sampler costs $10 and is well worth it. They also offer a choice of five or so tapas and five main courses. We did not order any tapas. I ordered the chicken breast suffed with ham and cheese and my friend ordered the ribs. Our food came before we had finished the beverage sampler at what seemed to be just the right amount of time. The chicken was fantastic. It was very well-flavored and it was nice to be able to enjoy the beverage sampler with the main course itself. My friend also enjoyed his ribs. The staff came by a few times during the meal to make sure we were okay.
In addition to the fine food, I feel I need to comment on the location. In one word: stunning. It is located on the edge of a bay in Guanica. There is a dock on the water and you can take a tour of the area which includes the winery. We did not choose to go on the tour and I was under the impression that attendance is limited (but I did not confirm this).
If you want to go somewhere different, this place is it. It represents what I consider to be a new stage of gastronomy. I highly recommend a visit.
We learned about the Bodegas Andreu Solé from the January-February 2014 ¡Que Pasa! Magazine, the Puerto Rico Tourism publication. The prospect of visiting a winery in Puerto Rico was intriguing. We went as a group of four couples for the Sunday afternoon meal and visit of the vineyard (with prior reservations, as mentioned in the article). We were seated around a beautiful old wooden table under a large sunshade just at the edge of the bay. Our server, Lisa, explained the various tour, drinks and food options and we all decided to take the samples of wine, sangria and rum, the appetizers, and the main course as well as the visit to the vineyard. Lisa brought us the wine and sangria samples and the appetizers as we admired the peaceful bayside setting and the perfect balmy temperature. We were then to go on the tour of the vineyard, but rain threatened, the tour was postponed, and we decided to have the meal before the tour. This was wise, as a light rain turned into a downpour that lasted for hours. Needless to say, the tour was cancelled. Soon our sunshade fell to the assaults of the heavy rain and Lisa set up tables for us on the house’s protected upstairs balcony. She and the other servers were soon soaking wet through and through, but this only increased their attentions towards us. Some of us chose the churrasco (flank steak) while others had the mahi-mahi or the pork chops. All the food was excellent. With the meal came the wine and the passion fruit sangria, and then some more rum samples. We were only charged for the meal and the wine and sangria. We were all amazed at Lisa’s cheerful devotion to us and we all want to go back and visit the vineyard and enjoy the whole experience again – minus the rain, we hope!
What a delightful afternoon at a fabulous place! Good service, food, and wine! Waleska and Cindy were helpful and attentive!! They made sure we understood everything as our Spanish is limited. Thanks for such great hospitality!
Vistas y espacios espectaculares. Comida a otro nivel…
I had been to Bodegas before and decided to celebrate my husband’s 40th birthday with a group of friends. I called with plenty of time to separate space and preordered some cold and hot appetizers. When we arrived the night of the event, an area was already separated and 2 servers helped us get started…The food was brought in, an open tab was created and our delightful evening started. The best thing was that the area where we were located was just gorgeous! We were sitting in a cozy corner underneath palm trees and just in front of the water overlooking a full moon…it wasn’t too noisy but we could hear the piano concert enough to have a good background tune…the waiters were nice, looking to help us all the time and the food came in as requested. We had a lovely evening and are already planning to do it again!
The owner is the only person in Puerto Rico that does anything like this. The wines are made from his vineyard right in Guanica. Wine, sangrias, and unique cordials all hand made. Tapas are fantastic and vary week to week. Sometimes there is a person who makes a giant paella. The setting is pure magic. Music is live and of all genres. There is no place in all of Puerto Rico like this. Guanica is somewhat limited to entertainment and food. It’s a beautiful thing what the owner has created.
My wife and I visited twice to eat, drink, and listen to live music. The setting is on a bay, beautiful either night or day. The food and drink are well-prepared and well-served. And the live music is nicely varied and presented. If you want a touch of sophistication above the norm in the area, the Bodega is it!
Watch carefully for the entrancet off of the road. Lots of parking. May be crowded, which speaks well to the establishment.
No better place in Guánica to be right next to the water enjoying a sip and tasting wonderful tapas at sunset. Original, flavorful, simple. Service is excellent and the scenery without par in the neighborhood. Go for the cod and potato fritters. Try the flan (coconut, pumpkin, chocolate, cheese). Cheers!
